University Hospital East (UHE) is a comprehensive care hospital that offers services in 17 different fields of medicine and is driven by a commitment to quality, innovation and strategic growth. In April 2013, UHE will celebrate its 14th anniversary as a part of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Since its purchase in 1999, UHE has added to the over 120 year legacy of care at this community location by becoming a nationally recognized provider of medical services and maintaining its commitment to the residents of the Near East Side. UHE’s vision is to provide exceptional, compassionate, personalized health care with respect and friendliness to their neighbors near and far by extending the Wexner Medical Center’s mission into the Near East Side.
Some of University Hospital East’s nationally recognized programs include orthopedics and sports medicine, the Comprehensive Wound Center and the hospital based sleep disorder center. The OSU Health System’s orthopedics and sports medicine program is actually based at East and over the years has consistently been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best in the country. Surgeons at East perform hundreds of joint replacement procedures each year. The Comprehensive Wound Center takes a multispecialty approach to treating the most complex of wounds. The patient healing rate is high above the national average and has treated more than 40,000 patients.
The UHE Sleep Disorders Center is noteworthy for multiple reasons. It is the first accredited, hospital-based sleep disorders center in central Ohio. The faculty and staff provide quality care while researching ways to cure and prevent common diseases. For example, researchers at the Sleep Disorder Center have discovered a link between the common sleep disorder sleep apnea and heart disease. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Researchers were able to demonstrate that the use of a continuous positive airway pressure mask during sleep helped heal the hearts of patients with sleep apnea. This is an amazing example of how UHE is committed to improving people’s lives through innovation in research, education and patient care.
UHE is an important part of the OSU Health System but it is also a vital anchor institution on the Near East Side. There is no better demonstration of UHE’s appreciation and dedication to the community than the annual celebration of health and wellness on Community Day. This year, Community Day will be held on Saturday, April 27th at CarePoint East, located at 543 Taylor Avenue, 43203. The community is invited from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for a day of family fun, free health screenings and healthcare information; lunch will be provided. These free screenings include mammograms, prostate exams, sports physicals and much more. However, this annual celebration is not just about screenings and pamphlets. It is the Wexner Medical Center’s largest community benefit project and is literally a fun filled day for the entire family! Good music, free healthy snacks, face painting and music are just a few of the entertaining aspects of Community Day. So please be sure to join us for the 13thannual celebration of UHE’s commitment to this neighborhood and health and wellness.
